Welcome
“Hearing in the Hill”
Silver Jubilee Seminar -
1st - 4th October,
"GOLD SPONSOR"
Early in the year of 1985, due to lack of services for people with a hearing impairment, Shorty O’Neil had Australian Hearing send out a representative, this person was Laurie Upfield who was a senior Audiologist. There was a public meeting held at Radford House, attended mainly by retired miners, also a very few women, I was one of them. I spoke to Laurie after, regarding trying to establish a support group. From then on until September I obtained help from many people. Carl Holzberger was the Community Worker; He, Justin Lehman, myself and a few others held Deafness Awareness Week (now known as Hearing Awareness) at the Plaza. From then on a group met weekly, known as Broken Hill Group Better Hearing South Australia Branch. This changed to Broken Hill and District Hearing Resource Centre Inc. in 1995
So with this in mind the Hearing Centre as it stands today will celebrate 25 years of services to the people of Broken Hill by holding a Seminar on the October long weekend, 1st to 4th. This will follow in the pattern of the 2001 ‘Hearing in Isolation’ Seminar and will be called ‘Hearing in the Hill’ Silver Jubilee. Our Program for the Seminar is now available for you to download (PDF 442 kb). Please download our Registration Form. (PDF116 kb)

Our Focus
We have just recently screened the school children in Broken Hill, under the “Listening In” Project. We will be doing a paper on the outcome of this in October 2010. This project was made possible by Friends of ACE (FACES) and Deafness Foundation Victoria. We are grateful for this assistance.
We have also run a project this year in conjunction with the NSW Fire Brigade, Broken Hill Branch called “Sleepsafe”, where we are purchasing suitable smoke alarm systems for hearing impaired people. These will be loaned to people for as long as they require them, installation and maintenance will be carried out by the NSW Fire Brigade, Broken Hill and the Centre's trained Volunteers.
When the alarms are no longer required they are returned to the
project manager and re-allocated to new people. This project of
“Sleepsafe” has been made possible by the generosity of local
businesses, social and service clubs and individuals of Broken Hill;
also Brooks' donation of 6 alarms and the Local Fire Brigade's
donation of 5 alarms. We have a total of 33 alarms.
